Login On Connect

Introduction

Over the years, Undernet has faced issues with users being attacked by floodbots and script kiddies from time to time. And so, Channel Services and the Coder Committee implemented a hidden host system, allowing registered users to hide their real IP addresses from most users on the network.

Of course, this solution wasn’t perfect. It had a flaw in which a user could place you in their notify list, and see your REAL IP address before you logged into X. Some users wrote nick randomizer scripts that would scramble their nick on connect, and then change it back to their regular nick once they were logged into X and their hidden host was applied.

Undernet’s coders recognized this short coming, and eventually added support for users to login during the connection handshake. This process is known as Login on Connect. While your client is still connecting to the server, if you have login on connect properly configured, your client will pass your Username and Password along with a special flag that will instruct the server on how to handle your connection and your login information.

With LoC, it’s now entirely possible to log on to the network without ever revealing your true IP at any stage.

Using LoC

Setting it up is quite simple. Simply use the appropriate LoC ID that best suits your needs. The password layout that corresponds to the ID you selected is entered into the Server Password field of your IRC Client. Replace myUser with your CService Username, and replace myPass with your CService Password. Once you’re done, save your changes and connect to the network. You should be logged in automatically.

LoC IDPassword LayoutDescription
1-x+! myUser myPasswordThis will connect you to the network and log you into your username, but only if the login server is available. Your IP address will NOT be hidden. If the login server isn’t available, you won’t be connected.
2-x myUser myPasswordThis will always connect you to the network, even if the login server is unavailable. If the login server is available, you will be logged in. Your IP address will NOT be hidden.
3+x! myUser myPasswordThis will connect you to the network and log you into your username, but only if the login server is available. Your IP address will be hidden during the connection process. If the login server isn’t available, you won’t be connected.
4+x myUser myPasswordThis will always connect you to the network, even if the login server is unavailable. If the login server is available you will be logged in and your IP address will be hidden.

We recommend using LoC ID 3, as it ensures your IP address is always hidden while you are on the network.
